On the Summer Solstice the Sun is at its highest path through the sky and the day is the longest. A solstice occurs twice a year, whenever Earth's axis tilts toward or away from the sun, causing the Sun to be farthest north or south at noon. The name is derived from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstice, the Sun appears to stands still. On June 21, there are 24 hours of daylight north of the Arctic Circle (66.5° north of the equator) and 24 hours of darkness south of the Antarctic Circle. The equator receives 12 hours of daylight. :-)
