Have you ever heard of this???????

I weekly receive e-mail from http://www.babycenter.com/. I find them to be very informative and interesting articles. This one really took the cake though. Have you ever heard of PICA? Pica is craving NON-FOOD items during pregnancy. What? Are you kidding me? Yes, actually just yesterday I was craving a piece of loose leaf paper and I finally gave in to my craving!! ha ha ha ha. Seriously this is the hilarious article below:

"No one knows for sure. Some pregnant women develop strong cravings for non-food items such as dirt, ashes, clay, chalk, ice, laundry starch, baking soda, soap, toothpaste, paint chips, plaster, wax, hair, coffee grounds, and even cigarette butts. This phenomenon is called pica (which is Latin for magpie, a bird that will eat almost anything). No one knows what causes these cravings, but a combination of biochemical, psychological, and cultural factors may be at work. In some studies, these bizarre cravings have been linked to an iron deficiency — even though none of the craved items contain a significant amount of iron....

If you crave non-food items, it doesn't necessarily mean you have any sort of deficiency, and it definitely doesn't mean you should consume them! (No way are you serious!!! ha ha) In fact, eating non-food substances can interfere with your body's ability to absorb nutrients and may even cause a deficiency. And while eating ice is not likely to be harmful (except possibly to your teeth!), eating dirt and most of the other items mentioned can lead to illness, such as lead poisoning or bowel blockage, or in rare cases, even death. (I am so thankful for this newsflash!!!) If you're having any strong cravings for non-food items, it's a good idea to talk to your physician or midwife. (I would have to agree! Maybe check yourself in ..... and ask for some very powerful medication! ha.)
So, in conclusion..... I was just wondering what are you craving?
This chalk is making me drool......
Sometimes, I just can't resist it. I chug the whole tube after brushing.
And I mean this.... makes Starbucks look like old leftovers.

ha. ha. ha. ha.

Yes, I've heard of that?! I didn't realize there was such a variety of choices, though :-) Glad you don't have THOSE cravings - now, dill pickles, ice cream, (even Starbucks) might be different! Wow! only three months to wait!! Love to all....

OH MY GOODNESS, I think I've heard everything now. I would say that is more likely a psychotic disorder than having anything to do with being PREGNANT!!!

Love you!

Actually, I work with a woman who craved dirt while she was pregnant for one of her children. I don't think she ever actually ate any.....ugh.

Sooo very weird but yet...
I couldn't eat enough of raw potatoes with Christi...the smell of newly mowed grass or anything "earthy" would make me crave a raw potato! I kept them peeled and in a dish of water in the refrigerator so that they would be quickly accessible -- I don't recall smelling "earthy smells" in the last 10 years nor have I craved raw potatoes. WHATEVER!!!!

We absolutely MUST get together before this baby arrives.
